SEX EDUCATION – BY WALECASE
SEX IS BECOMING DETRIMENTAL AND A MENACE TO OUR SOCIETY BECAUSE OF LACK OF PROPER KNOWLEDGE.
We are all product of sex, whether we accept it or not, that is the fact.
Many are shy to talk about sex, many don’t even want to hear it.
If we don’t talk about it and have the right information about it, it will continue to be a threat human.
Last week on THE CASE.NG, Sex Education was the case for discussion there, and I will like to share my own opinion on this case.
What is Sex Education? Sex Education is the right or wrong teaching and learning about sex and topics related to sex, from parent, families, friends, teachers and society. (Personal Definition)
I want to also assert this that sex education is a continuous learning, as new knowledge and information can override old ones.
I will like to share my opinion on the questions listed here:
1. Should Sex Education taught in Schools?
2. Who is in the right position to teach children about sex, the Father, Mother or Teachers.
3. The best means to teach sex education in school and at home.
4. What are the things one need to know about sex, before marriage or before entering into a relationship?
5. Should Male and Female be taught sex education in the same environment (class)/at the same time?
1 SHOULD SEX EDUCATION TAUGHT IN SCHOOLS?
My answer to this question will be YES. Sex education should be taught in school, because
Also, I believe it is not all teachers that should be allowed to teach sex education in school, but only those who have the right knowledge and understanding about sex education.
Again, in school, we have different classes and levels. We have the Elementary School, High School and Tertiary Institution (University).
The elementary school can be further divided into Creche, Nursery and Primary. In elementary school, the motive behind the teaching of sex education, is to protect them from abuse that can affect them psychologically and their mental health.
At this stage, the students only need a bit of information that can protect them against any form of sexual abuse. So the teachers don’t need to go in details about sex to teach them.
I think information like the PANTS RULES will be helpful to them at this stage.
P-Private parts are private.
A-Always remember that your body is yours
N-No means no
T-There are no secrets from Mummy
S-Say something, so I can do something about it.
Let the students know about these rules at least from nursery class upward. Teach Children Sex Education but make sure you find the right way to do it, because it is a delicate issue.
Lastly on the elementary school, please teachers should not feed their students with lies about sex instead they should find the right way to teach them.
In high school, the sex education taught will be more advanced than that of elementary, and here it more delicate because it is not only to protect the student for sexual abuse only, but also to protect them from unwanted pregnancy. At this stage, the students are close to puberty and many of them are matured enough to get pregnant or impregnate someone. At this stage the students need to know more about sex education, they need more awareness about their body.
At the university, by this time the students are independent and they can make research on any issue related to sex education on their own.
2. WHO IS IN THE RIGHT POSITION TO TEACH CHILDREN SEX EDUCATION, THE FATHER, MOTHER OR TEACHERS?
It should be a collective thing, not just about one person. The father and mother are to play the major role he. When it comes to teaching sex education by the parents, the father should take responsibility for the male child and the mother the female child. But most time the mothers are the ones that are always available and close to their children, so I will advise that the mother should be equipped with information to teach sex education. That is why female education should be a world priority. Sex education should be learned from home first from a parent, then later in school by the teachers. The foundation of sex education should start at home.
3. THE BEST MEANS TO TEACH SEX EDUCATION IN SCHOOL AND AT HOME.
I can suggest or say this is the best method, to teach sex education because student are different from each other, and way of learning and teaching varies from one place to another. The mode of teaching in and the urban area will surely be different from that of rural area.
And at home parents are different from each other likewise their children and the level of their education also differs, so the way or means to teach sex education will al differs from one person to another. The most important thing they should ensure that it is the right information they are passing out in the right way.
4. WHAT ARE THE THINGS ONE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SEX, BEFORE MARRIAGE OR BEFORE ENTERING INTO A RELATIONSHIP?
There a lot of things to know about sex before going into marriage or relationship, and that is the reason why sex education is very important, as have said earlier that sex education is a continuous thing and new information can override old ones.
Let me list a few of them, birth control, ovulation cycle, mensuration cycle and many more.
5. SHOULD MALE AND FEMALE BE TAUGHT SEX EDUCATION IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT (CLASS)/AT THE SAME TIME?
If we want to put an end to all forms of sexual abuse especially against the minors, both gender must be taught together, there is no problem in teaching both female and male in the same environment at the same time once it is the right teaching and the teacher or guardian is not lying to them or passing false information, both female and male can be taught together in the same class.
